Each year the Jill Melmed-Buzzeo Award recognizes a Philadelphia high school student and connects her with our community of “girls with grit.” The selection process we’ve developed ensures we find, and celebrate, a student who best reflects our award criteria.

NOMINATION: JANUARY 1 TO MARCH 1

Principals and leaders of community-based programs nominate eligible students via a brief online nomination form. We encourage principals to submit detailed responses, and to apply early to allow the nominee ample time to complete her application. We also invite principals to nominate more than one eligible student. Please review our eligibility requirements before submitting a nomination.

NOMINEE’S APPLICATION: JANUARY 1 TO MARCH 15

We will reach out to nominated students and invite them to respond to three brief writing prompts. Nominees must submit their responses by March 15. The writing prompts relate to our award criteria and the applicant’s planned use of the award itself. No transcript or financial information is requested. Nominees are welcome to submit other additional materials.

FINALISTS SELECTION: APRIL TO MAY

The board of directors reviews all nominations and applications to determine a finalist pool. Nominees who have not been selected as finalists are notified by the board at this time.

FINALISTs INTERVIEWS: APRIL TO MAY

Finalists participate in a one-hour interview held on school premises.
